Formed as a society in the 2023, Aotearoa Neurosurgeons New Zealand (ANNZ) is a tertiary service operating from departments of neurosurgery in five of the main cities’ hospitals.

Neurosurgical services have been provided in the main centres for many years. The first centre was started in Dunedin by Murray Falconer in 1943, then in Auckland in 1945 by Donald McKenzie, in Wellington in 1964 by Tony James, in Christchurch in 1981 by Martin Macfarlane and Hamilton in 2006 by Venkat Balakrishnan.
We perform brain and spinal surgery in the public and private hospitals in these main centres. Our mission is to provide neurosurgical services to the people of New Zealand, and to develop the service for people in the Pacific Islands.

Our work force as of 2024 comprise 0.49 neurosurgeons per 100,000 population. Ideally we need 1 per 100,000 population. International medical graduates make up over 50% of our neurosurgical workforce.
We are affiliated with the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. For information on neurosurgical training please refer to nsa.org.au and www.surgeons.org
